POPULARITY!
AUCKLAND’S WEMBLEY RECORD GATE TAKINGS SATURDAY’S CROWDS DECORD takings were handle at the Winter Exhibition on Saturday, a great crowd in the evening contributing handsomely to the total. Clicking merrily throughout the day the turnstiles registered a total sum that approached the four-figure mark. The actual amount was £909 11s, compared with £495 18s for the same day in 1926, £609 7s in 1926, and £256 in 1924. The takings for Thursday and Friday of this year were £494 7s, Saturday’s receipts were thus nearly twice as much as the aggregate for the two opening days. In Saturday night’s dense crush it was sometimes difficult to make headway. Swarms of people crowded round the more popular stalls. A singer airing the latest in song hits had an attentive audience. In other sections of the show there was always a following for those demonstrating manufacturing or cooking methods, or the latest in domestic or industrial appliances. Amusement Alley, with boxes of chocolates as the stakes, retains its popularity. The long line of stalls was breasted by hundreds throughout the evening.
While many concentrate on this, the lighter side, there is yet plenty of attention for the more serious aspects of the exhibition, and thousands are learning from the various booths of the merits of New Zealand-made goods. In view of the bad weather that has ruled since the opening, the big attendances are particularly gratifying.
