When he won a two-mile race at Ashburton last year, O. E. Hooper thought a good deal of Locanda Child, and proceeded to map out a lucrative programme for the gejding. Every care and consideration was bestowed upon the son of Brent Locanda, and he improved both in speed and in stamina. Then a plunge was made, and the gelding left his supporters high and dry. It was thought that the pacer must have been off' colour, and so he was given the benefit of the doubt. But as time went on his people discovered that he was not truthful, and that on days when races looked easy, he failed badly. And just when he had backers twisted he would stroll home. After a few more trials, the gelding changed hands, and is now owned by a patron of M. B. Edwards’s stable. Locanda Child has ability, if he can only be persuaded to race generously.
