TROTTING
“ABAYDOS”)
NOTES AND COMMENTS Brightened Up The Australian pacer. Machine Gun, was very sore after his racing at Auckland, and for a few days after returning to Christchurch was a bit seedy. Since then he has brightened up in pleasing style, and will be back to form for the new season’s racing. If Properly Placed It is doubtful if Golden Devon has ever looked as well as he does at present. He is still under the care of A. Cox, at Addington. If the owner of the Great Audubon gelding would give up the idea of winning a big two-mile event with his crack pacer, and keep him to the shorter journeys, he should soon be a rich man. A Good Pair A. Cox is putting in a good deal of time with a two-year-old filly by The Triumph from Reta Peter. The youngster is well built, and knows how to trot, and Arthur is just the lad to teach the young ones how to do it right. Promises Well The three-year-old gelding Acre has strengthened up since he last raced, and should develop into a useful performer. Acre promises to assist his sire, Author Dillon, to Teach a higher rung of the winners’ ladder next season. Form Not Correct After chasing Lochree home at Ashburton the Australian gelding. Lulu Lad, lost all form. It is thought that he suffered from the change of climate. Since being placed in retirement he has
freshened up appreciably, and when trained for summer racing he should demonstrate that he is better than his New Zealand form to date makes him out to be. Not Down-Hearted The Invercargill trainer A. McLellan has taken advantage of the circuit being in working order of late to give Downcast solid tasks with a view to getting the Adonis gelding ready for racing at Addington next month. The sturdy pacer may be on the robust side to some extent, but he is looking well and behaving himself satisfactorily, and may give of his best soon. One For the Boys Since being put to the trotting gait, Nancy McKinney has come on out of all knowledge. She is in A. G. Wilson’s stable at New Brighton, and will be a favourite with the boys when she goes to the races. A Solid Customer The mile saddle performer Auguste Dillon is in good condition to be wound up for spring contests. He is again under the care of N. C. Price at Ashburton. The aged son of Huia Dillon will show later that he has not lost his punch yet. Boon to Southern Breeders The numerous breeding farms In Southland will have the services of the crack pacer, Happy Voyage 2.4 1-5, at their disposal next season. The son of Direct Volage and Honest Meg has been acquired by Mr. George Youngson, of Riversdale. Promises Better Results Dillon Wilkes has built up remarkably well since he raced last year. He is doing better and seems to be stronger and better in every way. The son of Marni Wilkes promises to make amends yet for several failures. A Grand Mare The spell has made a heap of difference to Sea Pearl. She is a grand mare. Her legs are in beautiful order and it will be a surprise if she is not one of the picks of the basket for big honours next season. The Aucklandowned mare will be one of the early fancies for the New Zealand Cup. Bred Right The pacing mare Maud Logan has been in work some time and bears a well-trained appearance. She is a good cut of a mare, and is bred to do well on the race-track. The filly won nicely at the New Brighton summer fixture. Meeting Them Half-way At a meeting of the Canterbury Owners’ and Breeders’ Association, the president, Mr. D. F. Dennehey, reported that the Auckland Trotting Club had agreed to alter the starter's position, as suggested by the owners and trainers, and had also paid half of the extra charge, £57 15s, for banking engine charges, incurred by 19 horses on the trip to the recent Auckland meeting. The Pacing Queen The pacing queen, Waitaki Girl, has enjoyed a wonderful winter, and it is obvious that she has never been as big in condition and as healthy and fit as she is at present. With a few winding-up essays the daughter of Harold Dillon and Stanley’s Child can be expected to put the opposition well on the ground in August. Holiday Beneficial The pacer Away, who is now in A. G. Wilson’s stable at New Brighton, looks wonderfully well. His enforced absence from the race-track owing to breaking down prior to the last New Zealand Cup has done him a lot of good, and he has furnished into a commanding horse. So far his injured leg shows no signs of giving way, and the Adonis gelding will be given another chance to distinguish himself. Well Connected Among H. Aker’s collection at Wildwood Farm is a half-sister to Waitaki Girl. She is by Logan Pointer, and shows a lot of quality. If she turns
out anything like her illustrious rej*" tive she will not do any harm at i business. Getting Cheeky Darknite, the hero of the big dividend at Addington, is disporting n self in an unassuming nmnn® r well-sheltered part of Wildwood F • He makes no apologies for bavins caused so much fuss, and avers, gets half a chance, that he will d again. Free For All The fact that the majority ot New Zealand Trotting Clubs, which pr vided a free-for-all in their P grammes, have decided to delet ,_ event in future, is referred to fo i. lant of the Sydney “Referee as i lows:—“The idea is somewhat sem For the time being. Great Btnsen. superior to other horses in the ion, but who is to say that m months or two years there will e half a dozen horses of be calibre. In that case, it can m estimated what an attraction tor-all would prove. It Pt and absolutely the best class of racing. it is a pity that the New Zealand tro^ ting bodies, with the except! t 0 Metropolitan Trotting club ’.“*L meir delete this class of racing from tn programmes.”
