TO DEFEAT DISEASE
CHRISTCHURCH BEQUEST A GENEROUS WILL (THE SUN'S Parliamentary Reporter.) CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. YUITH the object of assisting ** scientific research in New Zealand into cancer and consumption, the late William Henry Travis, of Christchurch, whose will was filed for probate to-day, has bequeathed the income from a sum approximating £40,000. The will provides that in the event of the subjection of these diseases in years to come, the money may be applied to the investigation of other diseases. The testator suggests that tlie income be used for assisting investigations of the. advanced student or medical practitioner rather than the giving of scholarships. The will proceeds: “As I believe men are capable of devoting time and talent for the love of their profession and good of humanity, it is my desire that the trustees reward and recognise such efforts by a medal of honour, with or without monetary consideration.” The testator suggests as trustees for the administration of the bequest the Mayor of Christchurch, the chief stipendiary magistrate of Christchurch, and a member of the honorary medical staff of the North Canterbury Hospital Board.
