YOUNG LARRIKIN
SUBSTANTIALLY FINED At the Whangarei Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M., Harry Ellis, aged 22, was charged with assault and also with being drunk and disorderly in Cameron Street. The police described him as a larrikin and a member of a gang of young men who were constantly causing trouble. The first witness, William Gwyn, bore on his face ample evidence of an assault. He stated that he and a young lady were sheltering from a shower at Appleton’s Corner, when Ellis arrived and seized her by the shoulder, at the same time using a very obscene expression in regard to her. Upon witness remonstrating with him accused struck him on the jaw. The young woman in question corroborated the above evidence. Constable Clements said that about 9.30 in the evening he had found accused near the wharf, very much under the influence of liquor. On the charge of assaulting the young woman, Ellis was convicted, admitted to probation for 12 months, and ordered to pay court costs, 21s 6d. For striking Gwyn he was convicted and fined £lO, half of which was to be paid to Gwyn. His Worship said that probation had been granted only on account of accused’s youth and his first appearance before the court.
