NEGLIGENT DRIVING
AUCKLANDER FINED An Auckland picture-dealer named Hugh Wood Farquhar failed to put in an appearance at the Whangarei Magistrate’s Court yesterday to answer a charge of negligently driving a car on the night of March 19. Lionel Davies, taxi-driver, of Whangarei, said his car was standing outside a store in Upper Bank Street. About 5 o’clock a car travelling at an estimated speed of 30 miles an hour, from the direction of Kamo, had struck the bumper of the stationary car. The travelling car had gone on without stopping, but afterwards witness had traced the number and reported the matter to the police. S. Weston, garage proprietor, who had been in his car on the opposite side of the street, gave corroborative evidence.
Accused, in a written statement, said that he had seen the tail-lights of the stationary car, but owing to heavy rain had misjudged the distance. There had been a slight impact, but not sufficient to be worth pulling up for. The magistrate, Mr. F. H. Levien. said a serious feature of negligent driving was when a driver did not stop after a collision. He convicted, and fined accused £5, with £1 7s 6d costs.
