Quay Street False Alarm.—A false alarm was received by the City Fire Brigade at 6.28 p.m. yesterday from the junction of Quay Street and thte railway crossing, and N.Z.
N.S.W. Child Endowment.—ln consequence of the declaration of the basic wage, Mr. Lang, Premier of New South Wales, states that the child endowment scheme will operate from July 1, and that the first payment will be made on August I.—A.
Fire At Buckland.—A five-roomed unoccupied house, owned by Mr. E. Piggott, of Buckland, and situated on Parker’s Lane, was completely destroyed by fire about 10 o’clock yesterday morning. The origin of the fire is unknown.
Opotiki Maori’s Death.—The death occurred at Opotiki yesterday in his own home of Toni Wetini, aged 86. Deceased retained his mental faculties up to the time of his death, which was very sudden. He belonged to the Whakatakea tribe, and was born in Opotiki, and lived there most of his life. _
