HIGH VALUATIONS AND LOW PRICES
ORATIA SETTLERS OBJECT A PROTEST MEETING That Avith the present low prices obtaining for butter and fruit, increased valuations on small settlements were seriously prejudicing the prospects of many settlers of making a living, was the consensus of opinion stated at a meeting of settlers held in the Oratia Hall on Saturday. Mr. H. M. Skeet presided over a large attendance. Mr. I*. G. Sharp pointed out that when the last valuation was made seven years ago butter-fat was 2s a lb and occasionally 2s 6d. The average price was now Is a lb., and he considered the unimproved value should be reduced in proportion to the price of produce. Mr. F.. Firth said that orchard values should be greatly reduced in order to compensate for the annual depreciation that occurred to their properties. Mr. Firth pointed out that to maintain the standard of the orchard settlements was a very costly matter. The district valuer wrote stating that he was prepared to discuss the matter with the objectors before the next meeting of the Assessment Court was held.
