The enthusiasm of the immense crowd at Wimbledon was aroused by the meeting of Miss Nuthall and Fraulein Anssem (Germany), in the first round of the women’s singles yesterday. The British girl received an ovation on winning in two straight sets on her first appearance in the tourney. She was more severe, and placed better than her opponent, whose service was her principal asset. The first set was closely fought, but in- the second the British girl’s fierce hitting tired out her rival. Although Miss Nuthall still serves underhand, in order to conserve her strength, her driving is immensely powerful. Five nations were represented on the centre court during the matches.
