NORTHCOTE BOROUGH
The Mayor, Mr. A. E. Greenslade, presided at the meeting of the Northcote Borough Council held last night. The engineer’s report stated that the whole of the stormwater drainage system in connection with the Queen Street improvements had been completed. A drop-pipe to connect up the high drains with the culvert in Denby Gully has been constructed and is complete with the exception of benching. Kerbing and channelling had been laid from Clarence Street to Denby Gully on the western side of Queen Street. The report of the waterworks engineer stated that residents outside the borough were getting water from the borough’s supply at a cheaper rate than ratepayers of the borough. The subject was referred to the legal and finance committee for their consideration. Mr. J. E. Mayes was appointed traffic, building and dangerous goods and explosives inspector. The combined committees inquiring ing to complaints received in connection with the sewerage works, considered it advisable to ascertain if a blockade had occurred in the outfall pipe and this work was authorised. The Mayor reported on the endeavours of the deputy-mayor, Mr. H. Weaver, and himself to make some satisfactory arrangements for the disposal of borough refuse, and put the following proposals before the council: —■ (a) “That the Birkenhead Borough Council be requested to allow the depot at Birkenhead to be used for the disposal of a limited number of Northcote services. That the council be asked to treat this as an urgent subject at its meeting next week in view of its bearing on the reduction of the Northcote sanitation rates, which are to be struck on July 5. (b) “That the Birkenhead Borough Council be informed that, owing to the installation of a drainage system at Northcote, the maintenance of the local depot would become finally oppressive in respect to the small number of remaining services, and therefore cannot be continued. ...” The council unanimously carried the Mayor’s proposals. Accounts amounting to £991 19s 6d were passed for payment. It was decided to make an offer of £2O to the ratepayer who owns the property on a corner of Queen Street where it is proposed to set the road back five feet to eliminate a dangerous corner. Cr. Maxwell resigned his seat on the Finance Committee as a sign of his disapproval of its policy not to make provision for a sinking fund for the present water loan, and the action of the council in refunding to the ratepayers the amount of £575 collected by the previous council for that purpose.
