CITY WATER HARMLESS
COLOUR ONLY OBJECTION REPORT OF COMMISSION That the presence of bacillus coli in water was not in itself harmful, but was looked on as indicating the possibility of harmful contamination, is the opinion contained in the report of the Water Commission set up to inquire into Auckland water supplies. It was considered that chlorination : was called for at Lake Fupuke, One i Tree Hill, Onehunga, Otaliuhu and Papakura. Although bacillus coli was sometimes found at Nihotpup and Waitakere, it was stated that chlorination was not called for. The only objection offered regarding Waitakere and Nihotupu water was on the score of colour, and that objection, it was considered, would disappear when the new filters were in operation. The storage of water in large quantities was also all in favour of the purification of the water. The appointment of a specially trained officer to see to the proper adjustment of the chlorinating plants was suggested as being worthy of the consideration bf the various local bodies interested, as well as the Health Department.
