Mosley, S.M., in the Police Court iL>-dav on Southland people who made bets with Alfred V Whitta, convicted tu Afarch of carrying on the busiest otf a bookmaker in Christc h urch. Henry Hamer- was fined £ 4 and costs, in default 14 day*’ imprisonment. Frederick Jarviia, of Invercargill, sent four telegrams to Whittw., and a letter with which £ 5 was enclosed. “Good luck,” he appended hopefully to the letter. Jarvis is a married man with eight children. “There is evidence of a number of bets,” said the magistrate. “In view of that, defendant cannot tae let off lightly. He is fined £(t and costs, in default 14 days’ imprisonment. Walter Neilscn was fined £ 5 and costs, or 14 days’ imprisonment. John Pickens, of Invercargill, wrote to Whitta, forwarding £1 for a bet on a double. Sergeant W. Hewitt, of Inverca:Kgill, said defendant w;xs a married labourer earning about £4 a week. The Magistrate: How can he afford to bet? “I don’t know, sir,” said the sergearet. “Most extraordinary; most extra--ordinary,” commented the magistrate. “Theer is evidence of only one bet and this man doesn’t seem to be in a position to afford to gamble. He is fined £2 and costs, in. default 14 days’ imprisonment..” Detective Mayne produced a letter and telegram sent to Whitta by Peggy Sweetman, of Invercargill. She sent £2. It was stilted she is a single girl, living with Iter father, who is retired. The fine was £ 3 and costs or 14 days’ 'imprisonment;
