CUTTING EXPENDITURE

STATE DEPARTMENTS PRESSED “V/E ARE VERY HARD UP” (From Our Resident Reporter.) WELLINGTON, To-day. A hint of the anxiety which is felt: in Government departments at making ends meet financially, was thrown out by the Hon. O. J. Hawken, Minister of Agriculture, to-day when answering u deputation of beekeepers. “There is a limit,” he said, “and unfortunately this year we are very much limited for finance. As a matter of fact we have to restrict our estimates very considerably to make ends meet. The Agriculture Department has reduced- expenditure by a good many thousands of pounds to meet the conditions, and other departments are the same. We are rather hard up this year.”
