NEW ZEALAND GOLFERS SHOWING FORM

ROYAL SYDNEY CUP MATCH HORTON AND ROSS DO WELL By Cable.—Press Association. —Copyright SYDNEY, Monday. The weather to-day was fine with just enough wind to make golf interesting for the Royal Sydney Cup match at Rose Bay when play commenced. All the leading New South Wales professionals, as well as New Zealand, Victoria and Queensland players competed. At the conclusion of the first round Bowman and Denham, New South Wales, with nett scores of 74, led the field, with Howard, James, Carnegie, Clark and W. Clark all close up. T. H. Horton, with 75 plus 2, 77, was the best of the New Zealanders. Horton went out in 34, including a one at the third hole. Dr. K. Ross also played well, with a score of 76 plus 3, 79. In the afternoon the steadiness of the professionals asserted itself, and W. Clark and Howard, with 146 plus S, 154, tied for first place. Carnegie Clark was only one stroke worse. T. H. Horton again played well, but his feet were troubling him, and he tired over the last holes, finishing with 78 plus 2, 80. His nett score of 157 gave him seventh place. This was the best performance of any of the visitors. Dr. Ross was again playing well, and went out in 36, including a 7 at the seventh hole, and he came home in 40. A. D. S. Duncan started well in the morning, doing the outward journey in 36, but he could not sustain the effort, and finished with 80. He did not improve in the afternoon, returning an 82 gross. L. Quin was patchy in the morning, but in the afternoon he played brilliantly, coming in, finishing with 79 gross. E. M. Macfarlane played well in the morning for 80, but he struck trouble in the afternoon, and returned a score of 87. The Victorians, Ivo Whitton and Russell, made a bold showing, but found their handicaps too much. The eliminating round of the Australian team in the Kirk-Windeyer Cup match takes place to-morrow. The fine form displayed by the New Zealanders since their arrival has made them most favoured for the International Match.

T. H. Horton and A. D. S. Duncan have become very popular and have a large following.—A. and N.Z.

GOLF IN FRANCE AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP LONDON, Monday. Len Nettlefold, the Australian golfer, with a score of 78 plus one, was beaten by a stroke in the Cachard Handicap Cup, which Vagliano, plus one, won. C. J. Tolley, plus three, returned a score of 80 net.

In the final of the French amateur golf championship (36 holes) Mellor, Isle of Wight, defeated Brower, America, two up.—A. and N.Z.
