SOCCER AT HUNTLY

SATURDAY’S MATCHES NOTES AND COMMENTS This district supplied six players for the Brown Shield rep. team., viz., Wliitelaw, Tate, Taylor and Johnston of the Huntly Thistle Club, and Dodds, Rotowaro, and Black, Pukemiro. Johnston having left here before the match, his place was taken by Smith, Wanderers, who went to right half. At the start Wliitelaw rickecl his ankle and was not in a state to give a good display. Of the match itself little need be said, for South Auckland were decidedly lucky on the day’s play. All the schools’ competitions were postponed on Saturday owing to the Waikato Winter Sl|ow. The display of senior Soccer at the recreation ground on Saturday, though not up to some of the exciting stages of former local contests, was nevertheless interesting. In beating the leading team, Thistle, Pukemiro had the most to say, running out with one goal more than their opponents in a trio score. Latimer, Black, E. Hall, A. Robinson and D. Hall were sound for Pukemiro, and Jock Tate, best player on the ground, Ned Tate and White shared the honours for the losers. Taylor played well till hurt, and then retired. Thistle were without the services of Whitelaw and Johnston, the former being hurt in the Brown Shield contest. Huntly tried conclusions with Frankton Railway, and a really good game eventuated. The Red and Blacks were unlucky to lose, for in the last quarter of an hour, Frankton were very tired, and Huntly had the best of matters. The result, a draw, was a fair criterion of the run of play. Hunter, at centre-half for Huntly, was the best player of these two teams, and gave a finished display. Harsell, in goal, missed nothing, and Hall played his best game to date. Of the rest, P. Davies, Bate, and Emmerson were best. For Railways, Chalmers and Moon were in the limelight, and Buchanan was steady. Rotowaro held their end up at Hamilton by beating Wanderers?' Dodds playing his usual good game for the winners by scoring their two goals, while Corkindale scored one for Wanderers. Neither team was at full strength.
