BAIL OPPOSED
BIG THEFT CHARGE A YOUTH REMANDED (.From, Our Resident Correspondent.') WELLINGTON, To-day. “We have every reason to believe that he knows the whereabouts of £1,600 worth of the stolen stuff, not yet recovered,” said Chief-Detective Ward in opposing bail for William Guthrie Smith, 21, who w'as remanded to appear at Napier on a charge of breaking and entering the premises of Stubbs and Millar at Dannevirke and stealing jewellery valued at £2,658. “While he professes not to know, I cannot agree to ball.” Mr. Dolan, for the accused: I am opposed to this manner of imposition in order to secure information, and suggest that this should not be a ground for opposing bail. We know he went to Sydney and was brought back, but if the bail is made substantial the ends of justice should be met.” Bail was refused, Mr. E. Page, S.M., stating that the man went to Sydney before and would have to be kept in custody this time.
