RACING

Winning at Ponies At the Ascot, Sydney, pony meeting last week, there were two New Zea-land-bred horses successful. The first was Bonheur, a six-year-old by Boniform from Margarethe, who landed the Novice Handicap, and created a race record. He was at a good price. The other winner was Inclusive, by Arrowsmith from Exclusive. Jumping Well ,

Cui Bono continues to school well over the big fences at Ellerslie. Yesterday morning he made a good showing in company with Glenotus, and with a little more schooling he should get on the winning list. He is engaged In the Hunt Cup on the second day of the Auckland winter meeting. For Amateur Riders

There are some smart hacks engaged in the Carbine Plate on the second day of the Auckland meeting, an event restricted to amateur horsemen, and run over a mile. Two of them are Town Guard and Tinokoa, and they will be in great demand on the day if they have the services of good amateurs. Handicap Criticised

A correspondent writes criticising adversely the handicapping of Town Guard for the Members’ Handicap on the opening day of the Ellerslie fixture. The horse, by the way, was scratched soon after the appearance of tne weights. Town Guard has been allotted 8.6, with a minimum of 8.0, and the correspondent points out that he has only won two hack races to date. Town Guard won at the recent Avondale meeting over a mile with 9.0, and on the second day ran second with 9.8. In the Members’ Handicap Town Guard was placed on the same mark as good winners, such as Charlady, Indian Sage, Nadarino, Master Doon, and Archeen, and in being there the handicapper has shown the exalted opinion he has of the hack. Six pounds above the minimum for a real good hack in an open sprint event is generally not out of the way, but when the scale is such as it is in the race under review, then Town Guard’s party appear to have cause for dissatisfaction. The horse was scratched early in the week for the Members’ Handicap, but he remains in the Jervois Handicap. Ellerslie or Otaki

Diogenes may race at cither Ellerslie or Otaki. If he goes to Auckland for the Cornwall Handicap, probably H Wiggins will have the mount, but if at Otaki L. G. Morris will be in the saddle. A Sure Thing!

Mr. J. S. Barrett, the owner of Charlatan, received an unusual communication this week from an admirer of his steeplechaser. It was a brief note, as follows: —Re Charlatan. Sure winner for Great Northern Steeplechase. Do not use the pen. Crystal.” Probably the writer has received some information, not from the horse’s mouth, but from a fortune teller. Unfortunately Mr. Barrett has decided not to follow the advice tendered him, and Charlatan will not fulfil his Great Northern engagement. Team For Brisbane

G. Price intends to leave Sydney for Brisbane with Rawhetu and Bernesk by the Canberra, which sails from Sydney to-morrow. Bernesk has 7.13 in the Brisbane Cup, two miles, and 8.0 in the Moreton Handicap. 1£ miles, while Rawhetu was allotted 7.9 in both races. Accompanying Bernesk and Rawhetu will probably be the 14.2 pony Prefect. Prefect is trained by G. P. Nailon, but is owned in Queensland, and his owner has a race at Townsville in view for him. If present intentions are adhered to. Ransack will also make the trip to Brisbane for the Q.T.C. meeting. Her engagements include the Stradbroke Handicap, six furlongs, in which the handicappei awarded her 7.9. This race carries a stake of £ 1,250.

Rossendales as Hurdlers Hampden is the first of Rossendales stock to be tried over the hurdles in Australia, and but for ricking himself the chances are he would have done well at Randwick. His promise as a lepper opens up fresh possibilities for Rossendale horses, and, taking English results as a guide, there is every reason to believe that they are natural jumpers. At any rate, one ol Rossen-

dale’s get in Count Ross won th< richly-endowed Liverpool Hurdh £2,160, for which he started favourite ind won by eight lengths, wnile other of the sire’s get to succeed over th hurdles in the Old Country are Colin dale and Rugeley.

The hounds meet each day at 11.30 a.m. Riding Engagements Latest riding engagements announced for the Auckland winter meeting are the following: Mr. S. Howard, Town Guard in the Carbine Plate; R. Olive. Karamu, Slump, Miss Lucca and Clockwork; E. Stan way, Passin’ Through and Rahepoto; A. Tinker, King Merv and King Lu; H. Dulieu, Hoariri, King Smock, Wyoming. Two Steeplechase Candidates Tuki seems to be a plodder, and so to is Dick. Both are engaged in the Great Northern Steeplechase. They worked in company yesterday morning, but their task was a good round at three-quarter pace. They hit out fairly well, and should strip very fit on the day. With the going so heavy as it is sure to be next week, then plodders will play a big part in the decision of the Great Northern Steeplechase. Schooling To-morrow The heavy fog that descended on Ellerslie on Thursday morning seriously interfered with the plans of trainers. Very little could be done before 9 o’clock, and this threw operations back considerably. There was not a great deal of fast work done, and there was little jumping. Therefore it is almost certain that there will be a lot of jumping to-morrow morning. and with the hill open from 10 a.m. there should be some spectacular bouts over the big fences. Among those to undertake the journey over the hill are Comical, Dick and Maunga. Preparing For Ellerslie

Anchor has been worked the reverse way on the Marton grass track in view of engagements at the Ellerslie Great Northern meeting, his mission being the hack hurdle events. Qualifying

The Rangitikei Hunt has had several good runs this season, and a number of horses are qualifying for future hunt events. The number includes Banjuke, Alaric. Risk, Great Day and Franfelt. Ellerslie Too Hard

Allan McDonald, the well-known cross-country rider, was in Marton during the week-end. He has made a splendid reqorvery and may attend the Otakei meeting in preference to the Great Northern fixture as he is of opinion the distances of the Ellerslie races may be a bit gruelling for him. For the past week he has been riding work on the Hastings track. Dunedin Rehandicaps

The following rehandicaps haVe bee declared for the Dunedin Jockey Club’ winter meeting:—Otago Steeplechase Vice Grand, 9.7. Brighton Handicap Strathnavis, 8.7. Tradesman’s Handi cap: Celerity 11., 7.12.
