SOUTH AFRICAN VETERANS
A number of questions affecting the welfare of veterans of the South African War were discussed when members of the association met last night.
The chairman. Liejt.-Colonel E. G. Fraser, told the meeting that the Hon. G. J. Anderson, Minister of Pensions, had promised to forward the request for a pension increase for South African War veterans from £l3 a year to £26.
Free medical treatment is being claimed by the veterans, many of whom are still feeling the effects of their injuries. The Minister of Lands, the Hon. A. D. McLeod, has been asked to extend the benefits of the Discharged So'diers’ Settlement Act. which at present only applies to those who served in the Great War, to the men who fought in South Africa.
It was decided to ask permission to hold a street collection in aid of the association’s benevclent fund, which enables assistance to be given to old soldiers who are in need. It was also agreed to have a flag suitably inscribed to distinguish South African veterans on ceremonial occasions. The annual re-union of the association will be held in the Society of Arts Hall either on July 8 or July 15, according to which date the hall ia available.
