PICNIC DAY A HOLIDAY
That “picnic day” is a holiday under the cooks’ and stewards’ (Northern Steamship Company, Ltd.), award, is decided by a judgment of the Arbitration Court filed on May 20. The court gave judgment for the plaintiff in two cases in which the inspector of awards proceeded against the Northern Steamship Company, Ltd., for employing H. Seed, G. Flack and E. Anderson after 9 a.m. r»n picnic day, and failed to pay them overtime rates for the work so done.
The Inspector of Awards also asked for £2O penalty for another breach ir. causing the Matangi to sail on a holiday and fail to pay the workers an extra day’s sea pay.
The court found that the men were entitled to overtime rates for the tiunemployed, and also to an extra day’s; sea-pay. No penalties were awarded.
