NEW FIRE STATION
MOUNT ROSKILL BUILDING FORTY TENDERS RECEIVED Forty building firms tendered for the construction of the new fire station for Mount Roskill Fire Board, the lowest tender, that of Watson and Holmes, at £3,111 9s, being accepted. The large number of builders who sent in prices for the work is believed by the architects, Messrs. Jones and Palmer, to be a Dominion record for the building trade. The highest tender received was £4.435 and the lowest £3,111 9s. The new station, which will be erected on Mount Albert Road near the base of the Three Kings, will be a twostoreyed brick building, having a frontage of 3Sft and a depth of 76ft. On the ground floor there will be accommodation for two engines, and immediately at the back of the engine room is a yard into which the motors can be backed if necessary. A workroom opens from the engine room, and a convenience which will be appreciated by the firemen is a drying cupboard for uniforms. A watch room is provided on the ground floor, and at the rear are several living rooms. On the first floor there, is a large recreation room, a board room and a small kitchen.
At present the fire engine is housed in temporary premises near the offices of the board. There are 17 men on the brigade, which is a volunteer one, and arrangements have been made for three of these to sleep in the new building. Superintendent C. A. Woolley, who has been recently appointed to the brigade, will be in charge.
