MELANESIAN BISHOPRIC

DR. STEWARD’S SUCCESSOR ASSISTANT-BISHOP’S POSITION Dr. Steward, the retiring Bishop of Melanesia, is not expected to return to New Zealand from his missionary diocese until next year. His actual retirement from the bishopric will not take place until then. is rife in Anglican circles as to who will be Dr. Steward’s successor. The decision rests with the New Zealand bishops. The assistant-bishop, Bishop Molyneaux, has no actual right of succession, but it is quite possible that he will succeed the bishop. The Melanesian Mission clergy and workers will possibly press for his appointment. On Dr. Steward’s return from the Pacific a request, in all probability, will be made for him to spend at least a year In New Zealand. By this means attention to the great undertaking of which he has been the head could be attracted.

The importance of writing a history of the mission from the year 1919, when he assumed office, will also be brought under Dr. Steward’s notice.
