“WHITE SHIP” SAILS
WAIPAHI FOR ROROTONGA The Union Company’s steamer Waipahi left Auckland last evening on her first trip to Rarotonga. The vessel has been completely overhauled and specially fitted out for the Cook Islands fruit trade. The Union Company entertained representatives of the local fruit importers on board the vessel yesterday afternoon. Mr. D. Carter, Auckland manager of the Union Company, in welcoming the guests, recalled the days 40 years ago whesi schooners were employed to bring fruit from the Islands to Auckland. Mr. Harvey Turner, president of the Auckland Fruitgrowers’ Association, on behalf of the guests, said that the action of the Company in fitting out a vessel specially for the fruit trade, would enable the people of New Zealand to obtain fruit in a much better condition than formerly. The Waipahi should be back from the Cook Islands in IS or 19 days, nearly a week quicker than is usually the case with Island vessels.
