LATE RACING
ELLERSLIE JOTTINGS DAY BELL IN SPLENDID FETTLE After his work-out this morning, the Great Northern candidate Day Bell is likely to come into favour. The promising young hurdler, in company with Lomint. covered a round on the course proper in 2.3 4-5. The work-out was accomplished in nice style, though the trestles (two) were close in. Day Bell looked as if he could have improved on his effort. Did It Well Royal Present visited Kllerslie this morning, and with R. Olive in the saddle was schooled over two pony and four o' the larger hurdles, giving a good display. Tall Timber, with E. Garrett as his pilot, accompanied Royal Present, but he was inclined to run about and made several mistakes. Proved Too Good Tliursby, now’ in R. E. Brown’s stable, is being hustled along, and has been moving well of late. However. Star Comet proved too good for him over half a mile on No. 3 grass, run in 51sec, in a good sprint this morning. Schooling Tasks There was a fair amount of schooling at Ellerslie this morning. Kamehameha (T. Williams) was sent over six hurdles, giving a satisfactory display. Karamu (R. Olive) jumped two hurdles in good style, and Simplicitas ajid Clockwork, ridden by J. Sharkey ajid R. Olive respectively, were sent over two pony and two of the larger hurdles. Moving Nicely Though the English-bred mare Ballymoy 11. has still an enlarged leg, she has been putting in a little work, and on No. 3 glass moved nicely. Engagements at Hawera H. Wiggins has been engaged to ride Orazone, Master Gamp. Baby Bun and Archeen at the Egmont meeting on Thursday and Saturday. A New Departure The Australian importation Royal Present has proved a big disappointment on the flat for some considerable time, and though he worked well prior to any meeting he would not produce that form in a race. The son of Berugoon, now trained by R. Hall at Papatoetoe, has evidently been receiving plenty of schooling, for when he visited Ellerslie this morning he jumped in approved style. Evidently Royal Present is to be raced over hurdles at the Great Northern gathering, and if he displays the same ability under silk as he does in his schooling tasks he should make good. At Thames The ex-Whangarei trainer, W. Donaldson, is now’ situated at Thames. H. Dulieu will journey down this week to ride Hoariri and company at work in view’ of their engagements at the Great Northern meeting. Disappointed
It was anticipated that Wyoming would get in the money at the Avondale meeting, but he failed to materialise. His track work leaves nothing to be desired, and should he produce that form in races would be hard to beat. Wyoming galloped well this morning in company with Michael.
About Baby Bun Baby Bun had been moving nicely on the track prior to her departure for the Egmont meeting yesterday. The daughter of Some Boy 11. has shown a liking for the Taranaki district, having notched a third and a second at New Plymouth, and a win and a second at Stratford so far this season- She will be ridden by H. Wiggins, and may not be friendless in whatever races she competes.
