YACHTING FINALE

VICTORIA CRUISING CLUB THREE CUPS SAILED FOR With the coming of darkness on Saturday night, the curtain fell on the Victoria Cruising Club’s finale for the 192 G-7 yachting season. There was a good turnout for the three handicap events, but the boats had to contend with a very patchy light breeze, which veered intermittently from south’ard to easterly, as well as with a flood tide. THE LAUNCH RACE The start of the first race, for launches, under sealed handicaps, was delayed for over a quarter of an hour owing to the Manurere having to lay the mark off the western tide deflector. Manurere was first over the line, but Pal o’ Mine shot away to the front, and after increasing her lead all the way, completed the course in 123mins. The result was: Manurere (27m in 30sec), 3hr 13 mins 55s 1 Irene (24min), 3hr 12min 4sec. . 2 Pal o' Mine (scr), 2hr 48min 45 sec . . 3 THE CASEY CUP Ve-nus was first over the line at 2.45 p.m. in the C, H. L, and N classes race for the Casey Cup, closely followed by Cooee, Malua, Rakoa, Lucille, Winifred, Wairiki, Spray, Celox, Why Not, and Louisa, in that order. Mowai was three minutes, and Starlight three and three-quarter minutes late in crossing the line. Lucille and Spray soon went to the front, close astern of Venus, who held her lead in the windward position on the run down to Resolution buoy. Venus was well ahead on the run up the harbour to the Rona buoj\ Winifred being next in the running, a long way back. Then followed Starlight, Spray, and Lucille, at short intervals. It was after sunset before Venus crossed the line, and practically dark before the next five finished. The result was: Venus (111 min), shr 32min 27s 1 Winifred (12lmin), shr 42min 3sec 2 Lucille (10min), shr 45min lOsec 3 THE RAE CUP Surprise led around the mark at 2.53 p.m. in the Rae Cup race for V, S, and M classes, with Lancia, Mollie, Maroro, Sea Sleigh, Namu, Muru, Millicent, Swiftsure,. Aratu, Wild Wave, Leveret, Drone, Mawhiti, and Atangatai following close together in that order. Manene was five minutes late crossing the line, but, picking up a strong puff before it reached the other boats, which were practically becalmed off the end oi: the tide deflector, rapidly overhauled them. Swiftsure withdrew from the race soon after the start. Surprise was well ahead passing the Maui at the end of the first round, with Maroro next in the running. Aratu, which fouled the top mark, in the strong tide, retired, at this stage. Drone was next past the flagship about 11 minutes later, followed by Mawhiti, Manene, and Mollie. Drone fouled the mark off the tide deflector, and withdrew. The race resulted: Surprise (scr), 4hr 27min 46sec 1 Maroro (scr), 4hr 29min 20sec 2 Lancia (14min), 4hr 43min 23sec 3 BOONSTRA MEMORIAL The T, X, and Y class boats got away at 3 p.m. in the race for the Boonstra Memorial Cup.
