ELEPHANTS AMOK
PANIC IN AMERICAN CITY tv Cattle. — Press Association.—Copyright NEW YORK, Monday. An extraordinary incident occurred to-day at Newark, New Jersey. When the mid-day traffic rush was at its height, three elephants ran wild through the heart of the business district, and trampled an elderly woman to death, and injured two men. Hundreds of women shoppers were thrown into panic by the occurrence. The animals were being led to the stage entrance of a theatre, where they were to give a performance after a parade through the streets, when a cat appeared from an alleyway, and terrified the elephants. They broke from their trainers, and charged madly through the crowd that had gathered to see them. The police reserves were called out, and 40 patrolmen and three trainers had to chase the maddened beasts for a mile before they could be corralled and quieted.—A. and N.Z.
