BASKETBALL

SPLENDID COMBINATION AUCKLAND’S EASY WIN Playing like pastmasters, or rather mistresses. Auckland won the intervarsity basketball tourney to-day, putting up cricket scores in both firstround and final matches. The combination of the girls was remarkable, and their fleetness of foot and handing of the ball put them in a class by themselves. The final between Auckland and Victoria was played with a will. The northerners were never out of position. and their clever anticipation repeatedly left their opponents standing. Their neatest move began with Miss K. Wann, the jumping centre, hitting the ball to Miss Jean Mueller, who passed to Miss Jean Mclntosh. A smart cross run by Miss Yolande Orbell would put her in position to Pass to Miss Marjorie Adams under the goal post, and the shot was rarely inaccurate. This was repeated time after time, Miss Joyce Brownlee often supplying a heady pass to help the result. By half-time Auckland was leading by 42 to 18. Victoria applied themselves vigorously to the game', but the shooting often spoiled a good move ' Scores:— FIRST ROUND. Auckland beat Otago, 59—9. Victoria beat Canterbury, 37—18. FINAL.
