There was also plenty of money for Town Guard and Paddon. A good start saw Abbey Day first to bit the front from King Arch, Paddon, Arch Queen, Town Guard, Nassock, Orazone, and Waitekohe, and running past the ‘five furlongs Abbey Day was still in the van, Town Guard having run up into second place, and Modest Boy, Paddon, King Arch, Orazone, Waitekohe, and Lady Spalpeen following. Abbey Day turned for home just ahead of Modest Boy, Town Guard, King Arch, Paddon, Orazone, and Waitekohe. FORM AT HAWERA ON SATURDAY (By Abaydos.) Aorangi Improves Handicapped on a 3.44 mark in the Auroa Handicap, Aorangi surprised the natives by tramping the twelve furlongs in 3.33, recording the very substantial time' improvement of 11 sec. Aorangi, who recently won at Blenheim, is a son of -Gold Bell. Gold Circle in the Money Gold Circle ran a very creditable race in the opening event and beat all but the winner, Aorangi. McQuoid’s three-year-old son of Gold Bell—Lady Natalie should not be long now in registering a win. Caterpillar Consistent Berkett’s trotter Caterpillar, who raced consistently at Wanganui, added another second to his list in the Matapu Handicap, jn which he was defeated by half a length by Bright Light, which evidently dazzled the Caterpillar. The Nelsonian must soon be rewarded for his consistency. Roez Improving The Aucklander Roez, also got into the money in the twelve-furlong trotters’ event, but was not far enough advanced at the finish to return a dividend. The Mangere-trained mare keeps threatening to land a stake and may break the run of outs any day now.

The Shrew too Shrewd The Shrew, who is always a foeman worthy of the steel, carried too many guns for the Southerner, Hoon Hay, when it came to the settling point in the Cup. Both pacers finished gamely, but The Shrew had the best of the deal. The Hal Zolock mare last month won the Manawatu Cup in approved style, and at the Taranaki fixture three days later annexed the Farewell Handicap. Karma Collects As anticipated, Karma improved on her showing at Wanganui on the opening day and calmly collected the stake in the Stratford Handicap. She was made a warm favourite but was hunted out to head off Denver’s Doll. The daughter of Nelson Bingen races in the same ownership' as the Cup winner, and both are trained by W. Head, who also steers them in their engagements. Explosion Bubble Exploded The three-year-old Explosion was looked upon somewhat in the light of a moral for the President’s Handicap. and it certainly looked as if the good thing would duly materialise, till Anselm coming from the back, cut the favourite down to win by a length. The Nelson Bingen colt will not be long in making amends for this reverse. Anselm’s Acceptable Price After his fine showing in the Cup : in which he finished a good third, it was somewhat surprising to find Anselm so feebly supported for the President’s Handicap, but those who stuck to the son of Nut Ansel were amply rewarded for their confidence in his ability to concede Explosion 156 yards, a task he accomplished attractively. The Waikato-trained gelding ran a good race at Alexandra Park on the occasion of the Waikato meeting, when he finished second to Concliffe in the Waipa Handicai).
