A DEAD CALM
DISAPPOINTED YACHTSMEN SATURDAY’S RESULTS There was hardly a breath of wind to ruffle the waters of St. Heliers Bay, when boats from the Tamaki, Devonport and Akarana Clubs lined up for the start of the various races on Saturday. Some boats were unable to reach St. Heliers in time for the racing at all, while most of those that were there had to be paddled into position. The M class boats.—Manene, Maroro. Mawhiti and Mollie—started just before 3 p.m., nearly half an hour late, arid it was nearly 4.30 p.m. before they rounded the first mark, the Bastion light beacon. It was decided that the course would be sailed only once around, and the handicaps halved accordingly, but it was well after dark before many of the boats crossed the finishing line, and many did not finish at all. The Mollie did not finish. The race was won by Manene (5 h. 59m. 48s) from Maroro (6 h. 3m. 145.), with Mawhiti (6h. 15m. 255.) third. The results of the other races were: V AND S. There were only two starters in each of the Star and Z class races, Ola IV winning from Moa in the Star class. Ariana finished in the Z class, Tuatea withdrawing. RICHMOND CLUB’S REGATTA Entries for the Richmond Cruising Club’s annual regatta, to be held next Saturday, close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday. Races for H,I, L, N, V, S, T and Y classes are included in the programme, and if there are sufficient entries, there will be a race for outboard row-boats as well. RACE TO ROCKY BAY. KEEL AND CENTRE-BOARD YACHTS The results of the Devonport Yacht Club’s cruising race to Rocky Bay were:— Victory, 2£m, 1 (9h 0m 265); Ngatoa, scr, 2 (9h 46m Is); and Prize, lm, 3 (lOh 14m 10s). The absence of wind and the force of the outgoing tide led to the six entrants for the naval cutters’ race being recalled. Although H.M.S. Diomede had only berthed that morning she supplied two cutters for one race. The other four were from H.M.S. Philomel
