ST. PATRICK’S SPORTS
TWO CRACKS MISS FINAL NESDALE WINS |-MILE Including athletics, of nearly every description, the St. Patrick’s Day sports, which were postponed from last Saturday week owing to bad weather conditions, were held on the Domain on Saturday. The entries for all events were large and consequently during the earlier part of the afternoon much time was spent in the running off of the numerous heats in which competed many athletes of national fame. The conditions above were overcast and there was a slight cold in the air, but this was beneficial to the competitors and with the track in good order some excellent performances were recorded. The 100 yards was a disappointing race not from the point of view of the time registered by the winner, but by the failure of both* the two Auckland cracks —Williams and Elliott—to qualify for the final. In both the heats neither Williams nor Elliott made a showing and the same thing occurred in the 220 yards. Had they both started in the final the keen tussel for supremacy would have proved a feature cf the meeting. The better man of these two has not yet been proved and Saturday was to have been the great day. As Shirley was about to get away in the 120yds hurdles he was knocked down by a cyclist and suffered a badly injured leg. Neverthless he lined up for the start and won the race from the back mark in great style. There were only two other competitors in the race, L. A. Carrol and W. A. Faucett, and these two were passed by the back marker at the sixth hurdle. A young athlete, E. P. Henshall, who was a school boy last year, caused some suprise in the mile handicap. Starting on the 50yds mark he soon took the lead from the rest of the field and it was not until entering the home straight that the New Zealand champion, Savidan, who was running his usually good race, overtook him. The lad immediately challenged the champion in the final dash, but was unsuccessful. This performance alone makes Henshall well known among local enthusiasts and in the future we should see more of him in this distance. A. C. Garlick met his match in the 440yds hurdles in F. Nesdale, of Te Awamutu, an ex-New Zealand champion. Garlick got away well and in the back straight quickly overtook the rest of the field except Nesdale, who made the pace quick for the first 150yds, Garlick was running second to him, but some distance away, and the race ended in that order in the fast time of 59 4-ssec. In the quarter-mile flat Garlick made up for his loss in the hurdles. He ran a strong race throughout and after the first 220yds had been covered he was an evident winner although it was not until the final dash that he obtained the lead with Deere and Frost following close up.
