NOT TO BLAME

BUTTER DIFFICULTY -

DEFENCE OF CONTROL DAIRY MANAGER’S VIEWS “The fact is, the principle of market-regulation through the medium ! of the Dairy Control Board has not yet been tried out in the slightest degree and it is a travesty of facts to suggest that the board is responsible for the present position,” said Mr. Dynes Fulton, chairman of directors of the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Co. Ltd., when speaking on the position at home to a representative of THE SUN to-day. His company, said Mr. Fulton, viewed with very grave concern the latest decision of the Control Board to abandon the policy of price-fixing and to throw large quantities of produce on to the market, to be disposed of practically at the unrestricted will of buyers. The result could only be regarded as extremely serious to the producers of this country, and it was useless for those interests which had deliberately brought about this result for their own ends, to endeavour to throw the responsibiilty on the board. Partisan Meetings Useless. The question now facing all those with the well-being of the country at stake, was what was best to be done to minimise the ill-effects of this latest move. Holding partisan meetings such as had been called by the opposition interests for Palmerston North could effect no really constructive purpose. Nevertheless, the producers were entitled to have a clear statement of the position from the Control Board and were entitled also to have an opportunity of expressing their opinion on the matter. The only proper and effective way in which this could be done would be for the Control Board to convene a meeting, as had been done when the board wished to have the opinion of the producers on important matters last April. The attitude of the New Zealand Cooperative Dairy Co., Ltd., shortly put. was that the best should be done to protect the company’s interests and this could best be achieved by the Control Board taking a grip of the situation and proceeding along the lines that his company has indicated.
