TO THE EDITOK OK THE SAMOA TIMES. Silt, —In your last week's issue, there is a lament of some poetical sprite, whose whole time and ability was wasted on that composition and gin and water, from Oct. 20th up to Dec. 21st (the day of insertion). This poet's ability is only obscured by his greater modesty, in suppressing his first and greater production, which was sent to me by a friend. In justice to the poet I hope you will insert his first, which is more to the point, and will cover him with gin and water if not with laurels. What ail- ibis V.\pi as-.-s checrfillness? To Till. EDITOK "1 INK SAMOA TIMES. Silt,—Please allow me, through your paper, to correct a false report that, some mischievous person has circulated concerning myself, to the effect that 1 am a candidate'for tie- Premiership under the Samoun Government. 1 wish it to be distinctly understood that, so long as 1 have any self-respect, or a spark of honesty left. I would not accept of any office that the present Government could give me. ' J am. &c, \\. M. Williamson.

To Tin; editoi: of the saMoajnmiss. Sir, — In ymir columns of December 21st you mention my name as one figuring on the list of candidates for the Premiership of Samoa, with the addenda, "if you were correctly informed.'' For your own information, and, by "the medium of your columns, for the information of your readers, I beg to state that you have been misiuforuiedj upon this subject. Knowing the difficulties which surround this delicate and exalted rank, as well as the ungratefulness of the Saiuoan people, it is scarcely possible that either myself or any old resident in Samoa who is well acquainted with the customs and language of the Sarnoans, would venture to become a candidate- for the rank of

" Premier," or, in my opinion, " Le Dernier." Neither is it likely that any new comer, However predeut or wise ho may be, with no knowledge of the Satnoan language or customs, will be able to draw the country out of the state of little less than anarchy in which it hits been, and is at present. 1 pity him and the labour lost I 1 would much advise such candidate that, should the people's choice fall upon him, his first cure be to draw his first year's salary in advance ; he needs no guarantee for the sec.nd year, as most undoubtedly his Premiership will not outlive the first one. If on the other hand pure love for the Sainoans and his adopted country direct his motives, and salary figures not in the question then do 1 wish hearty success to tliis regeneration of the Golden Age, and undoubtedly the Sainoans—this innocent, honest, virtuous, ami grateful nation—wih remember his services, immortalize his name, and send him a little pig, forty talo, and a root of kava, 1 have the honour to remain, Deur sir, yours faithfully, Charles DeVeee. Apia, D. inber 27, 1878.
