DEFENCE OF SUEZ CANAL. REMARKABLE OPERATIONS. Press Association —Copyright. Austr* lian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received 10.55 a.m.) London, December 28. Mr Massey, war correspondent, describing the defence works on tin* Suez Canal, emphasises the permanency of the works as well as their enormous magnitude. The expense has been heavy, and the work arduous, but the troops’ stout hearts were equal to the task, and the money was well spent. .The army has civilised the desert, and the results will remain when the war becomes history. It was necessary to push the defences far enough from the Canal to place the Canal out of the range of the heaviest modern artillery; consequently, many pipe lines tor a water supply were laid down, and many roads and railways now link the Mediterranean with the Gulf of Suez. There is one .remarkable railway of. standard gauge, whereon London and South-Western engines draw loads' as heavy as any they drew in England and do 201) miles out and the home journey night and day to a strict time table.
