STRATFORD HOSPITAL BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the Stratford Hospital and Charitable Aid 'Board was hold this morning, when there were present: Messrs E. Walter, c D. Sole, R. McK. Morison, A. Meredith, -I. Christoffel, J. Smith. ) In the absence of Mr <l. McAllister, Mr Walter was. voted to the chair. | His Worship the Mayor (Mr Boon), waited on the meeting, and brought under notice the plight of a woman land five children, who needed assistI a nee. The husband had been before I the Court on several occasions, the last time lie had been ordered to pay arrears or be sentenced to three months’ imprisonment. The amount of the arrears was £3O 10s, and the man admitted spending some of the money on races. Neighbors bad piactitally kept the family, but this could not go on for ever. The eldest child was six years of age. He suggested . that the Board should insist that the I man should either carry out the order of the Court or take the consequences. It was the most distressing case that had ever come under his notice.
Mr Sole said, while the Board was willing to do its part, it should not he forgotten than an uncle who was a single man in prosperous circumstances should also give ins assistance. The Board decided that the police l>o asked to take proceedings to enforce the order of tiio Court, in the meantime temporary relief to the extent of 15s was granted. It was decided that the Chairman, Mr Sole and the Secretary ho appointed a sub-committee to report at next meeting on all cases of charitable aid granted by the Board. COB HESPON DEXCE. W. J. Anderson, Director of Education, wrote asking the assistance of the Board in obtaining a list of men-
tally defective or imbecile children in ' the Board’s district, suitable for admission to special schools provided for thorn. —Received. MrsL. Maclachlan, nurse of Whangamoniona Medical Association, wrote tendering her resignation as mir:-r from September 1, 1916. — Accepted with regret. REPORTS. Dr Steven, Medical Superintendent, reported that during the month of August, 20 patients were admitted, sixteen discharged, arid there were five deaths. Seventeen patients were in hospital at the end of the month. Ten operations were performed under anaesthetics.—Adopted, i The nurse of the Whangamomona Medical Association reported that during the month of August, thirteen eases received attention, one of which was still under charge. Two cases wore serious, and both were sent to Stratford for doctors* treatment. The case under charge was of a child requiring constant attention, but the case was not one of urgency. The fees charged were £1 Ills, amount collected being £2 Ids fid.—Adopted. Mr A. Gray, sanitary inspector, reported : Premises were disinfected in Stratford Borough after phthisis case. Three samples of milk were forwarded to the Dominion analyist for analysis. Five samples of bread were weighed, and the results of weighing reported to the District Health Officer. One baker was warned for carrying bread on top of cart exposed to dust. Defects were remedied at two butchers’ shops. One drainage nuisance was abated. Two premises in Strutfoul Comity were re-visited re recommendations made for abatement of nuisances, but nothing has yob been done in either case.—Adopted. The gardener, Mr C. Corkin, reported that the garden and ground was in good .order, and he had a piece of ground ready, for crops.—Adopted. - GENERAL. Mr Sole reported that the chimney authorised to be built at the Hospital had been - constructed, and was now iu use. Tlie name of Miss Fanny Linn, Douglas, was placed on the probationer’s list. Accounts amounting to £220 were passed for payment.
