A CRUSHING REPLY.

BOARD v. COUNCIL. A snh-committoe of the Borough Council, in its inspection of ground suitable as a site for the crushing plant and a yard for the housing oi other plant and property, selected part of the Domain facing Pago Street, which runs west from Broadway at the Commercial Hotel, hut it ; was a case of the Council proposes and .the Board disposes. 'I his will best he |learned hy a perusal of the following report of the business relating to the matter at the Council meeting last evening. I A. D. Stanley, secretary of the Stratford Domain Board wrote, stating | that the Board had no power to grant a lease for the purpose contemj plated by the Council. The Mayor, in moving that the letiter from the Domain Board be received, said that the suh-committee, consisting of Cr Thompson and himself, i who were appointed to get a suitable site for the crushing plant and corporation yard, had waited on the Board at its last meeting and ashed for the use of a portion of the Domain facing Page Street. The deputation pointed out. the unsightly appearance of the present crushing plant, which is situate on the road in Fenton Street. The plant had been there for years, {and the road had been used for a 'dumping ground since the plant was in 'stalled. The Council wished to get a now ground so that the stone could Ihe worked more economically. The j site asked for was about one and a- | half acres near where the stone was {taken out of the river. The piece of land was not used at present. ~he j Board had its hands full with its j domains, yet it turned down the Council’s proposal. If the plant was removed, the road would be cleared up and properly formed. If the Council was able to get a suitable yard they would be able to do away with two horses and drays. Cables could he ! swung across the river, and the stone t could be removed in trolleys to the carts. The Council could install an electric motor, and instead of having a man looking after the engine all day, lie could turn on the switch in the morning and help feed the crusher. The cost of installing the motor would be about £l5O. The Council would save about £2OO a year. At the present time they, crush about 2500 to 3000 yards a year, and they would save about Is a yard. A suitable site was a > very important j matter which should not be allowed to.

drop. The Domain Board stilted they could only give a 12 mouths’ lease hut that could be got over if the Board and the Council came to some agree- ! ment. At the present time cattle tramp the stone down and instead of I costing 6d a yard to remove, it cost •about Is. Ho was very disappointed 'at the Board not meeting the Council, as the Board was not spending a ' great deal on the Domain. A site at McCluggage’s mill had been suggested but that was too near the permanent site at Swansea Road.

1 Or. Thompson, in seconding the ’motion, said it was a pity the Domain was not under the control of

I the municipal authorities. He had i nothing against the Domain Board, hut dual control did not pay. Cr. Young said he had visited sev- , eral sites, and he was surprised at ' the Board not granting a lease. If, the Council could save money, it was in the interests of the town and would favor the Board as well as the Coun- , cil. j Cr. Stanley said the Act specified that no buildings whatever could be i erected on the Domain. I The resolution to receive the letter was carried.
