THE TONGARIRO WRECK.
Per Press Association Napier, September 4. Reliable advice lias reached Napier concerning the position of the Tonga-i-iro cargo. It can be salved at low tide, but at high tide occasionally there is a heavy swell which prevents preparations lor a low hours. ilie wind being from the north quarter since the wreck has prevented the vessel breaking up. A fair amount of cargo ims been removed. Another big crack has appeared in the vessel. Salvage of the hull is hopeless. Captain Plunkett, Lloyd’s surveyor, inspected the wreck to-day. The waterside workers at Port Ainu-sri this morning refused to accept work offered by Messrs Richardson and Co., their grievance being that they should all have a turn at the work of unloading the Tonganro at 10s per hour and 15s per hour overtime. No end of men accepted the work. Three boats were affected.
