FIVE ENEMY ATTACKS REPULSED. MINOR SUCCESSES ADMITTED. The High Commissioner reports:— London, Sept, 1 (4.40 p.m.) The British official report says: Subsequent to yesterday's attack at High Wood, the enemy made five further counter-attacks on a 3000yard front from Guinchy to High Wood, preceded by an intense bombardment. In four attacks, the enemy, who was in considerable force, was defeated with heavy losses. In the fifth attack, he succeeded in penetrating the advanced trench on' a small frontage at two points. ARTILLERY FIRE ACTIVE ON THE SOMME. FUTILE GERMAN ATTACKS. London, Sept, 1 (3.55 p.m.) The French official report states: On the Somme, artillery fire is active in the regions of Esftrees and Soyeeourt. Between the Oise and the Aisne, we made a coup de main, and. at Nouvron, and took some prisoners. There have been abortive German attempts at Croix Jean and Boir Le Pre tie.
FRENCH PROGRESS SOUTHWARD Paiis, September 1. A communique reports: A grenade attack on our positions at Maurepas Wood was easily repulsed. The Daily Telegraph states that the casualties published in August amounted to 4693 officois and 123,097 men, of whom 1156 officers and 19,520 men were killed. The casualties published in June totalled 31,501, and in Fuly 59,071.
