STRATFORD SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Stratford .School Committee was held last night, when there were present: Messrs J. W. McMillan (chairman), C. Mu.rtin, l'\ J. McDonald, W. i'inliey, 11. Sanderson, K. W. Hancock, W. McDonald, P. 'Skoglund, and C. H. Lawn. CORRESPONDENCE. The Secretary of the Taranaki Education Board wrote .stating that Miss No rail Moore had hem appointed temporary assistant in the Stratford School, the appointment to date from .) tine 13th.—Received. HEADMASTER\3 REPORT. The Headmaster (Mr F. Tyrer) repotted as follows: The school attendance to-day (Juno 13) was, Primary 655, Secondary 149, total 704; the register numbers respectively are G2l, to2, /Si). A few bases of measles are still in the district, and now the older children, principally, are attacked. The attendance in the infant room is good, and in fact, the, department is already "crowded." A temporary teacher to lill Mr Adlant's place arrived

this afternoon. 1 understand that the teacher selected to fill the position permanently cannot come till the first week in July. Miss McCulloch, of the secondary department, has .accepted a position in the Dannevirke District High School. This means yet another change in the work, or rather method of working, of one of our iriost important secondary divisions. The result of so many changes will bo felt when the next annual examinations are to be faced. ThcAgrictdtural instructor has agreed to supervise The planting of hedge plants, jarid as soon as these are available, he is willing to commence work. In my opinion, the. Eloagnus is a suitable plant for hedging a school play ground. The work of the school is proceeding satisfactorily.—Adopted.

VISITING COMMITTEE'S REPORT. Messrs McMillan, Skoglund and Lawn, visited the school the day after last meeting. Re asphalt—-Arrange-ments were made for repairs to be effected; but so far, no work has been done. Channel under hand basin outside—A concrete channel has been put in, but not yet too satisfactory. Treeplanting—No action was taken. During the month a leak occurred in the roof in the main building. Urgent repairs were eifected, but further necessary work hits been deferred pending communication with the Education Board on this matter. The school has been visited on two occasions, when most of the (lass rooms Were inspected, accompanied by the Headmaster. There are certain matter.-; as regards surface drainage wuich need attention, and the attention of

the Borough Council should be drawn to the state of the watertable on Cloton Road as it affects the surface drains from the school grounus. A small destructor is urgently required, and the need should be pressed on the Education Board to supply this. The Visiting Committee have otherwise found matters well up to the usual mark as regards tidiness am! attention.—Adopted. GENERAL. The matter of tree planting was left in the hands of Mr Lawn with power to act. In regard to improving t'uc playground, Mr Skoglund moved: "That

the work lie done acoWding to the 'plan drawn up by Mr Lawn, and that jhc be thanked lor doing same."—Lurried.

Mr Skoglund moved, and the Chairman seconded, "That the Board's, attention be drawn to the leak in the bitumen roof, and it bo asked to repair same at the earliest possible moment." Carried.

I On Mr Lawn's motion, it was decided 'to draw the attention of the Borough Council to the water tables on Clotoll , Road, and ask if to a (tend to same. Mr I?. .1- McDonald moved, and Mr Skoglund seconded, "That the Education Board be written to asking it to supply a small destructor in which to burn the school refuse."—Carried,

| Mr W. McDonald moved that 20s wq;rh of timber be procured for the ''Technical School pupils to build seats •for the girls' playground Seconded by iMr Pilihoy, and carried. It was decided to purchase one ton of coke for use at the school.
