PERSONAL.

The death occurred at the Woffington Hospital on Thursday night, at the' age of 68, of Mr Francis Loudon, a well-known figure in the city. The death is announced from Sydney to-day of Mr William Turner, who was the first Labour member to sit in the State Parliament.

On Sunday the Hon. Mr Allen was the guest of the Stratford Patriotic Committee, and was taken on a motor trip to Opunake via Eltham, Riverlea, and Awatuna and home by the Main South,Road, through Mam aia and Eltham. The weather was very unfavorable for sight-seeing as rain fell just at starting at 10.30 a.m; and half-way through the out- ' ward journey a heavy downpour necessitated the unfurling of the side-curtains on the carp, thus reducing the prospect. On reaching Opunake shortly after noon a visit was made to the beach, but heavy rain soon drove the visitors to shelter. After lunch a start was made on the return journey, also in the rain; which, however, had cleared somewhat when the party stopped at the Kaupokonui Factory, where the manager (M r McDonald) took the visitors through the works’. The Minister was impressed with the magnitude of the company’s operations, and expressed himself in terms of warm praise on the quality of the cheese being manufactured. On resuming the journey, the weather was dull and threatening, and before reaching Eltham rain was again falling heavily, , and this continued until home was reached at five o clock. Notwithstanding' the adverse conditions, however, the trip proved an enjoyable one. The party consisted of the Minister, and his private secretary (Mr Dixon), Mr J. W. McMiilau, in Mr IV. P. Kirkwood’s car; ami Messrs 11. Masters. F. J. McDonald and “Evening Post” representative in Mr Masters’ car.
