On the Sea
AUCKLAND-BOUND SHIP ON FIRE United Peess Association. (Reqeived 8.15 a.m.) Capetown, November 14. The Dutch steamer Rionw, hound from New York to Auckland, arrived afire. The captain reports that the fire broke out five days ago, and the applicances had proved futile to cope with the outbreak. SUNK BY SHELLFIRE. Rome, 'November 13. A submarine sank the Italian steamer Firenze in the Mediterranean. Six passengers and fifteen of the crew are missing. Twenty-seven passengers and ninety-six of the crew were saved. It is semi-officially announced that an Austrian submarine sank the Firensse in the vicinity of Syracuse. The vessel was bound to Port-Said. The Firenze's crew were mostly!Lascars, who abandoned their posts 'when the submarine opened fire. After six boatloads had been lowered the submarine sank the Firenze by shellfire. An U boat sank the Ancona and also the Firenze, though the 'Austrian' flag was flown in each case. 1 Newspapers state that Italy has ordered an inquiry into the nationality Of the submarine which sank the* Ancona, and will declare war on Germany if it is proved to have -been a German ; ohe. The Admiralty announces that the submarine E2O lias not communicated since October 30, and it is feared that she has been sunk. pfyt ienemyV*wireless message says that three officers and six of the crew are prisoners.
