TARANAKI EDUCATION BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the Taranaki Education Board was held yesterday. Present: Mr H. Trimble (chairman) and Messrs E. Mark'll. A. M. Bradbury, R. Masters, G. A. Adlam, E. Mackay, A. Morton, and the Rev. A. B. Chappell. Leave of absence was granted to Mr A. H. Halcomhe. MOVEMENTS OF TEACHERS. The following were granted leave of absence:—Miss M.'Wilson, head teacher, Vogeltown; Miss Tooman, assistant, Stratford; Miss Gleeson, assistant. Central ; Miss Cocker, assistant, Waitara; Miss Grant, cookery instructress; Miss Lennon, pupil teacher, West End; Miss Harle, pupil teacher, West End; Mr Cutler, head teacher, Kaimata; Mr H. Thompson, assistant. Stratford.' The following' resignations were accepted:—Mr Evison, head teacher, Bell Block; Miss Bell, dressmaking instructress; Miss E. Brickell, sole teacher, ‘ Mapgaehn. OVERSEER’S REPORT. The overseer reported that required repairs had been carried out at the. schools at Ratapiko. Tuna, Tarnrn- 1 tangi, Norfolk and Inglewood. The report added: — Tahora.—Temporary school. We have extended this building from 23ft. by 12ft. to 23ft. by 22f%| and also added a small verandah porch at the hack. Tlie classroom,, will now provide accommodation for 50 children. ' SITE OF A SCHOOL. A deputation, consisting of Messrs H. Rowe and F, J. Browning, waited on the Board to objeetdo the proposed site of the new school to he provided at Pukengahn. They asked" that a more central site should ho selected, and' the ground at, the new site would he provided by the residents of the locality. To reach the proposed site of the school some of the children would have to travel over a mud road from one And a-half’to two miles. A committee, consisting of the chief inspector and Mr Masters, was appointed to go into the fhatter of site and report to the Board.
GENERAL. The Secretary for Education wrote stating, the Minister regretted his inability trrmake a grant for a school at Radnor. It was decided to draw the Department’s attention to the necessity of a new school at Radnor. On the recommendation of the director, Miss M. Mikkelson (of Auckland), was appoii'i'ted instructress in dressmaking’ at the Technical College in succession to Miss Bell. It was agreed that the Board should vote for Mr Janies H. Sheath to fill the position, as a member of the Committee of Advice of the Wellington Training College. It was decided to inform the Taranaki branch of the Educational Institute that no adverse comment reflecting o.n the efficiency of the teachers in giving physical instruction was made in the recent- discussion by the Board. The following appointments on school committees were confirmed Rahotu,’Mr Williamson, vice Mr Annis, resigned; ■Hillsborough, Messrs W. Bint and H. G. Silby, vice Messrs J. R. Hill and H. C. Marr, resigned; Kent, Mr S. Hiue, vice Mr N. T. Bundle, resigned. Mr T. G. Ellis (agricultural instructor) reported inter alia : I am pleased* to report that with a view to stimulating yet more interest in -agricultural matters; Mr T." Boyle, of Pembroke Road, who for many years past has shown his practical"sympathy with and interest in the work of agriculture m the schools of the district, has inhumed me that it is his intention to present a silver shield for competition amongst the schools. The details and conditions upon which the shield will be awarded have yet to be fixed, but X am hoping to be able to submit these to the Board at the meeting in November.
