The climax in the Carso fighting was reached when the Kaiser’s Jaem . ger Regiment was brought up to the trenches for a last effort. The Emperor, a few days before, had reviewed them at .Vienna, renewing* their traditional oath. “1 swear to be as inflexible as iron.” 1 M The Kaiser’s Jaeger Regiment, who are mortlr Tylolese,- were convinced they were so irresistible that they shotted: “Surrender!” -in Italian. Tile Bergsglien shouted back: “We will eat your hearts first!” The next moment four thousand Bergsalieri. with bayonets, leaped in the trenches of the Kaiser’s Jaeger Regiment.. There was a desperate hand to hand struggle, even tecih being used. The trenches wer* soon piled with dead, and few of the emlay escaped.
