attack on Carso Heights, a regiment,oi f Grenadiers, the tallest men in tl|e|afmy, under Major Monfredi, approached within hlty yinds of the enemy’s trenches, and charged with fixed bayonets, crying “Savvia.” The Austrians broke and fled, but shrapnel forced the Grenadiers to shelter. when the enemy re-advanced, attempting to re-take the trenches. Major Monfredi, who is of great stature. seized a flag and shouted: Grenadiers! Remember that the Sardinian Brigade never retreated!” The Grenadiers flung themselves wildly on the Austrians, exterminating them. A shell carried off Major Monfredi’s leg and he died,.
