A correspondent in Petrogrnd says ;—Eye-witnesses of the recent lighting in Galicia relate inmuneralile episodes showing that the morale of the troops is not one whit affected by 'the continuous retreat. Wherever the artillery sufficed,, the Russians • easily withstood the attacks and drove back the enemy. There is a tendency in some quarters to attibute the Russian withdrawal from Galicia

superiority, some newspapers estito the enemy being in overwhelming mate that the Austro-Germaiis on this front number four million. Such statements are obviously unfounded, and the figures grossly exaggerated, but even if correct they arc far below the total at the disposal of the Russians.
