AUSTRIANS FORTIFY THE BUKOWINA FRONTIER. Times and Sydney Sun Service. (Received 8.0 a.m.) London, May 6. The Austrians are fortifying the Bukowin'a frontier, and have withdrawn eighty thousand from the Serbian frontier to strengthen the Roumanian frontier.

MISCELLANEOUS. UNITHD FmS« AISOO^'OK. Pefcrograd, May 6. On the Prussian frontier the Germans captured a Russian scout. They skinned and hacked to the bone his hand and arm in an effort to extract information from him. They then cut an artery in his neck ad lie bled to death.

Official: Fighting is proceeding stubbornly in Galicia around the Carpathians. The Germans brought up strong, fresh forces and numerous artillery. Enormous losses were inflicted on the enemy's massed formations. Some of our units fell back to the second .line of defences. The enemy captured part of our trenches on Mount Bukvuka, hut we dislodged them next day, capturing twelve hundred of the enemy. We have assumed the offensive on an extensive front in the region of Angelow, on the Upper Lomuitz. It is believed that none of the German raiders near Riga can escape except seawards. London. May 6. The Morning Post's Petrograd correspondent says the Austrians and Germans are now attacking the Russian right and threatening th€ rear of the advanced Russian line across the Carpathians. The Grand Duke's lines are intact.

HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT.

The Prime Minister has received the following from the High Commissioner, dated London, May 6th (4.25 a.m.):—

Between the Vistula and the Carpathians, the Germans brought into the fighting line fresh troops of great strength, being supported by numerous artillery. The enemy's massed formation is suffering enormous losses. Some of the Russian units fell back to the second line of fortifications after obstinate fighting. At Angelow, on the Upper Lomnitza, on Monday, the enemy's offensive on an extensive front was resultless.
