PERSONAL.
At the annual meeting of the .New Zealand branch of the British Medical Association in Christchurch, Dr. McGaven (Wellington), was elected chairman of the Council, and Dr. Gibbs (Wellington) was elected honorary jgeneral secretary. The Hon 11. Heaton Rhodes (Minister A Public .Health) was elected an honorary member of the Association. A special vote of thanks was passed to Dr. F. L. Scott (Christchurch), the secretary of the annual meeting.
Mr J. Gillick, postmaster at Toko, has received orders for transfer to the Trentham office, and will leave shortly on ftie arrival of Ins successor. During the short period of a little over twelve months in which Mr Gillick has resided in Toko, his sterling worth as a worker in all matters pertaining to the welfare and advancement of the district has made him many staunch friends, all of whom, while sorry to learn of his departure, will rejoice at his promotion in the civil service. Mr Gillick was a keen football supporter, being a member of the Toko Club, and also of the executive of the Eastern Districts Sub-Union, in the latter of which his efforts at the inception were highly appreciated by contemporary workers.
The career of Mr William Gallagher, who died in Wellington last Sunday, aged seventy-nine, was more than ordinarily interesting. In his early years ho was the engineer in charge of the condensing apparatus on various emigrant ships running between England and New Zealand. He was employed on troopships employed in carrying troops to quell the Indian Mutiny, was in Mexico in 1867 when the Emperor Maximilian was shot, and made one of his first voyages in the famous Great Eastern. During his wanderings, he travelled over most of the world, and at one time stayed at Louvain Castle, Belgium. He was thoroughly acquainted with Egypt, and up to the time of his death took great interest in the news of the movements of the Dominion troops there. For sme tiipo deceased. was engineer of one of the torpedo boats stationed at Port Chalmers many years ago.
