Napier, February 27
A sail fatality occurred on the beach tliis morning. A girl named Florence Miller, 17 years of age, was bathing in the surf with three firends, when the backwash carried her out. A young man named Andrew Robertson made a gallant attempt at rescue, but was twice thrown violently on the beach and narrowly escaped losing his own life. The body was washed up an hour later, half a mile from the place where it was carried in. A heavy north-east sea was running at the time. At the inquest this afternoon a member of the Life Saving Society expressed the opinion that the Society should be given power to prevent bathing when the sea was clanegrous. The Coroner advised that power should be taken by the Borough Council to prevent surf-bathing when the breakers are dangerous. A verdict of accidental drowning was returned.
