Williams, besides being suspected of many “jobs” in tins country, is wanted by the Victorian police in Melbourne. He was admitted to bail of £IOO on a charge of pocket-picking in 1911, but immediately left that State, forfeiting the money deposited. To a man of Williams’ calibre, however, that sum merely represented a lucky day’s work. “Fair Dave” had dyed his hair and moustache black, lint the detectives recognised him from a profile photo, that had been distributed over New Zealand. The arrested man is known as a ‘ lone-bander,” and had a reputation for cleverness in London, Ireland, South Africa, and Australia, in each of which countries he was well known to the police, and is described as an international criminal. During his stay in the Dominion he made his headquarters at Wellington, but travelled extensively about various districts. A large sum of money was found in his possession. When arrested, he made no attempt to resist the authorities.
