COMMISSIONER'S REPORT. London, Jan. £O, 5.30 p.m. Paris reports that artillery duels are general between the sea and the Somme and the region of Nieuport. There was a lively duel, the enemy vainly attempting to destroy a bridge at the mouth of the Yser, the Allies succeeding in demolishing a portion of the defences and also some auxiliary works on a farm near St. George's, which the enemy had strongly organised. In the La Grurie woods the enfemy violently attacked the French and allied troops, who recoiled for the instant, but recaptured by two energetic counter-attacks at first the majority, and, subsequently, the whole position, which they are now holding. At St. Hubert, the Germans exploded a salient north-east of the Allies trenches, but the troops rushing into the connecting outlets prevented the enemy obtaining access. North of Pont-a-Moussoii in the La Pretre wood the Allies are now established for a hundred metres beyond the trenches taken on Monday.
