TARANAKI EDUCATION BOARD.
SPECIAL MEETING. The Taranaki Board of Education met at the Board's office, New Plymouth, yesterday afternoon, when there were present: Messrs H. Trimble (chairman), A. Morton, E. Marfell, F. Mackay, A. Mel. Bradbury., R. Masters, J. Young, and G. A. Ad lam. APPOINTMENT AND TRANSFER OF TEACHERS. ■ The Board dealt with the recommendation of the inspectors regarding the filling of various vacancies. A letter was read from the Chief Inspector (Mr W. A. Ballantyno), stating that, in order to assist Ihe Board in carrying out its system for the appointment and transfer of teachers, the inspectors considered it advisable to advertise positions in the local papers. Mr Ballantyne explained that tlse object was to obtain definitely information as to what teachers were willing to accept, the positions that were offering. At present the inspectors could only recommend teachers for promotion, but there might often be cases where, for purposes of study, or for other purposes, teachers in the same grade might he willing to accept transfer, or might even he agreeable to accept an appointment in a lower grade. This system was carried out elsewhere advantageously. It did not interfere at all with the classification scheme, but merely simplified it, and at the same time did justice to all the teachers.
Mr Morton objected, on the score of expense. He thought that it could be arranged to advise the teachers, through the Teachers' Institute, or bv circular.
The chairman remarked that teachers wishing to transfer were supposed to notify the Board. The difficulty was to find those teachers, who, while tiot anxious for transfer, would be willing to take a particular vacancy if they had the opportunity.
The Chief Inspector considered that a circular would meet the difficulty. Ho pointed out that it would, moreover, considerably minimise any delay in making the appointments. At present they recommended teachers for transfer, not knowing if they were willing to accept, and if the teacher declined, that meant delay. The chairman suggested that the recommendation be referred back to the inspectors for definite, recommendation, but the Board ultimately decided to discuss the recommendations, which were adopted in toto, and will be submitted to the teachers interested. The letter re advertising the positions was held over until next meeting* » ■ i RESIGNATIONS. Resignations were accepted from the following assistant teachers:— Misses I. Andrews (Warea), M. Keppell (Xgaere), A. Olansen (Pohokura), and I). Cumberworth (Toko).
