OUTCOME OF THE NOTE. United Press Association. Washington, January 9. The British Government has notified that if American merchants persist in exporting to Germany and Austria woollen products, the modification of the embargo whereby Australian wool is allowed to enter the United tSatcs. will be promptly withdrawn. The State Department admitted that the raising of the embargo would be unjustifiable if American manufacturers used it to supply German markets. Similar complaints are made respecting rubber. THE WHEAT MARKET. New York, January 9.
The wildest pandemonium prevailed iu the Chicago pit. Following the reports of immense cash sales of wheat, options for May touched 141 J cents, and closed at 138} cents. For other months the advance has similarly reached a level that had not been touched for thirty years. THE DETENTION OF SHIPS. Washington, 'January 9. The State Department regards the British reply the contraband question as inconclusive. Mr Bryan and President Wilson are discussing a reply, with the object of making further representations to Britain on several points unsettled, notably shortening the time for the detention of ships. EMBARGO ON WOOL TRADE. (Received 11.15 a.m.) Washington, January 10. Regarding Britain’s notification that the embargo on Australian wool might be restored, the Government announces that it could not further object if Americans continue to seek to supply Germany with woollen goods.
